Checking In + Blog Update

March 7, 2017

Hello friends! Thanks so much for all the kind and thoughtful things you posted a few weeks ago here and on social media in response to the overly sentimental and weepy essay on last babies. I’m not sure what the future holds, but I do know that at some point I’ll move on from this phase of life and have FEELINGS about it. Please feel free to block me in advance.

Some of you have asked how it is going writing a book and when you can purchase it for $29.99 at Barnes and Nobles. Just kidding, no one asked me that and I’m pretty sure Barnes and Nobles no longer exists (fake news!). I will say that progress is being made and I’ll keep you updated when I can. I hope to be finished with the first draft by this summer.

In other news, I have recently partnered with favorite bloggers Grace Patton, Bridget Hunt, and Fran Dorsey and created a private facebook group to post reviews and sale items I find on the Internet. A group dedicated to finding great deals and brands for women, moms, and kids so you don’t have to. It’s an idea I’ve been tossing around for a few months now. Here’s why I finally did it:

  1. I do 99% of my shopping online and spend a lot of time researching the best deals on groceries, car-seats, leggings, etc. so I might as well make it a separate side job.
  2. As a consumer, I prefer to find out camelbak water bottles are on sale on Amazon via a facebook group I joined on purpose rather than a blog I subscribe to for other reasons.
  3. I enjoy the side of blogging that involves product research and reviews but do not enjoy dedicating whole posts to it.
  4. These types of facebook groups better allow for posting time sensitive deals.
  5. While Facebook is my least favorite social media for the social part of it, I do enjoy it for the private groups feature.
  6. I personally utilize these groups weekly and wanted to start my own.
  7. It’s fun.

This blog will still serve to occasionally review motherhood related products, but for the most part when I find something I love that’s also on sale–you can find it in this facebook group very uncreatively named the Sale Rack. Check it out or don’t! Here’s the link one more time. Opt in or opt out anytime. Make the notifications what you want. It’s a private group (for your benefit) so no one except others in the group can see if you comment or like something.

As far as the future of this blog goes, the only things on the horizon are a little round-up of the fake corner nursery I’ve been putting together for Novi, book reviews, funny tweets, and the occasional essay.

Finally, there are one million pockets of the Internet with bigger, smaller, better, weirder, funnier, wiser, or more interesting followings featuring things like windsurfing and indoor plants. I do want to say that I am thankful for this space and the encouragement and love you bring to me. Thank you for following along and supporting this blog, both in my work as a writer and my side job as a lazy blogger who occasionally finds things for 60% off on Amazon.

See you again soon, one way or another.

New Years Checklist

December 28, 2016

The week between Christmas and New Years is historically weird. Some of it’s the Christmas tree, just hanging out like the elephant in the room. And some of it is that even though the holiday is over, all our kids are still on break and asking for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at 9:30am.

Three days left of 2016. A few ways to pass the time.

1. Movies. A tiny morale boost: Amazon is offering a special promo right now where you rent any one movie for 99 cents. I think I am going to rent The Secret Life Of Pets tonight without the kids like the worst mom ever and eat all the snacks.

How: First find the movies that apply. Then click “More Purchase Options” and enter the promotional code “MOVIE99“. Once the promotional code has been applied, click “Rent Movie”.

Note: On site pricing will not reflect your discount, but your order history will show the promotional credit applied. Valid once per account. The credit expires January 23, 2017.

2. Music. Spotify has a deal right now where you can sign up for a premium account (NO ADS) for 99 cents for three months. This is an insane deal. Spotify and I don’t work together and I am not an affiliate of theirs, but I thought I’d let you know in case you love their service but cannot listen to one more terrible Home Depot ad. Kicking myself for signing up for last month’s ten dollar deal instead of waiting for this one. Anyways, you can find my playlists here.

3. New Year Reflections. Resolutions are often pointless, but I always appreciate the new beginning-ness of this holiday. A good time to look backwards and forwards and casually glance over gym membership fliers. This year I am looking less at gym memberships and more at the idea of separating my real job (writing) with my side job (blogging). No concrete ideas yet, just thinking out loud about ways to be even more annoying on the Internet.

Happy New Year, friends.

Christmas Cards + Minted Giveaway

November 9, 2016

Baer Card

I love Christmas cards. I love buying them, sending them, getting them in the mail. I do not love taking THE CHRISTMAS CARD PICTURE. You know how it goes. The posing, the sweating, the gritting your teeth while you whisper yell at your kids to look like you’re having a great time and stop picking your nose SO HELP ME GOD. Which is why this year we chose from photos we already had and left Austin and I out of the whole thing. A morale boost for everyone.

One thing we didn’t change was going with Minted for our cards. They have the best designs and let you stick the addresses on the envelopes for free. Win!

Four things to know:

1) First and most important–> YOU CAN WIN A $125 GIFT CARD TO GET THOSE CHRISTMAS CARDS FOR FREE!!! Minted has generously offered 125 bucks to their shop for one of my lucky readers. Click here to enter! All you need is an e-mail address. Giveaway will run today through November 16th. Don’t miss it! U.S. residents only.

2) Starting today through 11/14 – Minted is running their semi-annual Free Foil Event. 20% off all foil products using code FOIL20. Their foil-pressed cards are some of their best products and tend to be expensive, so this is a great deal!

3) They also have great Christmas gift ideas. I have my eye on this and this!

4) Minted believes that great design lives and thrives in the hands of independent artists that people do not have access to through traditional retailers. They use technology to allow consumers to discover great creative talent, making Minted a place where artists can learn, gain exposure, and build their businesses. I contacted them and for Christmas cards in exchange for an honest review.

Other fine print details include Austin really hating my themed hat picture.

Lately // October 2016

October 3, 2016

Hi friends. It’s been awhile since we’ve talked like this, so I thought I’d pop in to say I’m still here, avoiding piles of laundry and nursing a baby who believes I’m a 24 hour milk buffet.

When I’m not working on the book (most of the time) or parenting (all of the time), here are a few things I’m up to…

1. Dog-sitting and dog-walking via Rover to make a few extra bucks. My kids desperately want a pet, but because we’re already taking care of too many humans–this is a great compromise. They get a dog for a few days/hours and I get some easy side money. This weekend we watched a sweet Yorkie who was zero hassle, zero shedding, and great with kids. It was really fun! Yes, I make sure they are great with kids first (via a meet and greet and interview) and yes, you can set parameters on everything from dog size to if they are allowed on the furniture. You can also do it as few times or as often as you want!

2. Putting out a few Q&A posts on smart women via IG + FB. I have really been enjoying these series. Partly because I’m so proud of these women I get to call friends, and partly because I get really tired of talking about myself.

3. Reading this book for entertainment and this book for book club. Has anyone else read either of these? So far I’m enjoying them both.

4. Listening to this country mashup. I don’t listen to country music very often, but I really enjoyed this mashup of classics. Dolly Parton gets me every time.

5. Keeping this open in my Internet browser to read and re-read as needed. (For any other writers who occasionally need someone to tell them to keep going).

6. Not buying go-gurts for my kids anymore and making them myself instead with these. I am not especially crunchy, resourceful, or crafty (what a catch!), but I am able to make my own sleeves of yogurt instead of paying more money for more sugar.

7. Watching this special interview over and over again. Just in case you’re one of the few folks who haven’t seen it yet.

Everything else is more of the same: kids, work, kids, repeat–with an occasional mojito and trip to NYC on the side. Waylon is loving kindergarten, Eva is enjoying preschool and being the senior on campus when her older brother is at school, and Novi is doing what he does best (attaching himself to me like a spare appendage).

Have a great week!
